This is one of the finest houses in Sussex. There was a fortified house here in the Middle Ages, and some parts of this are incorporated in the east wing of the present building. (Listed Building Report)

Gatehouse Comments

The tenurial history is complex but the Elizabethan house was part of an estate obtain from Abbey of Westminster after the Reformation suggesting the earlier house was sub-tenanted. There does seem to be an earlier medieval house here but its form is uncertain. It is unclear by whom, and on what evidence, the suggestion that the earlier house was fortified was made.
