Ringwork visible as a sub-circular enclosure 76m by 70m acrosswith a ditch 8m to 15m wide and 2.2m deep. Inside this is a bank 10m wide and 1m high. There is a possible entrance on the west side. There is also a probable building platform 17m by 8m across and 0.5m high. Finds of pottery date the site to C11 and C12. (PastScape)

The earthwork is similar to that in Cromwell's Plantation where C12/C14 pottery and a hearth were excavated. A potsherd identified as C13 by West was picked up on the surface during field investigation, but this does not allow conclusive dating. Local tradition asserts that this is the site of an earlier (pre C16) Burgate Hall. (PastScape)

Gatehouse Comments

Now isolated in woodland but close to Burgate DMV. The supposed ringwork at Cromwells Plantation is not certain as a medieval castle but the evidence for this being a castle does seem stronger.
