Salter reports a C18 hall on site of vanished tower.

Gatehouse Comments

Neither PastScape nor the county SMR describe the earlier house as a tower. Listed Building report records C17 fireplace and walling from earlier house survive but again no suggestion that this house is either medieval or fortified.Hodgson gives a reasonable full history of the medieval manor, however he also writes "I have seen no account of the mansion-house of the Fenwicks, of Blagdon." The medieval manor was certainly of the status to expect to have a manor house with some form of fortification such as a chamber block tower attached to a hall but there is no supporting evidence for this and no fortification is recorded in the various late medieval surveys of fortifications and there seems to be no particualr reason for an fortification being omited from thoose lists although the holding may just be outside the Middle March.Without knowning Salter's source it is impossible to further investigate this site.
