Castle listed by Harvey possibly in mistake for roman fort. (PastScape records Roman site but make no mention of medieval use) Camden and Leland call this a castle (castrum) but attributes it to the Romans.

Gatehouse Comments

Clearly the defensive banks and ditches are Roman, but the south east quadrant of the fort, which is not built upon, on the opposite side of the road from the parish church, may have been the site of a medieval manor house (possible one mainly of timber). It is entirely unlikely that either Camden or Leland though of this as a 'castle' and they were probably using the term castle in the sense it is used in the Vulgate Bible (John 7.41), as a fortified settlement.
