A moated country house constructed in 1722-25 with additions of circa 1740. It replaced a castle licenced in 1332. The moat was infilled during the 19th century. The house is a copy of Palladio's famous villa overlooking Vicenza, the Villa Rotonda. It comprises a square block with free standing pavilions to the left and right. (PastScape)

Gatehouse Comments

A license to crenellate was granted to John de Mereworth in 1332. No medieval remains. The records are dominated by the important Palladian House and there does not seem to be a description of the medieval house beyond it being 'castle-like' and moated (even then the recorded moat may have been made for the C18 house)
