Taylor mentions 'near it betwixt it and Llandinabo is a decayed house and manour now a parcel of Harewood called Elverstone or Everstone. It was approached by a long avenue of chestnuts and was perhaps defended by contiguous mound which still bears the name of Petite Haute' (Robinson) 'Petty Hought' marked to N at SO529289 (from an 1877 estate map) (Herefordshire Through Time)

Gatehouse Comments

It is suggested that there is a low-level moated site at Elvastone, 0.7km South of the disused church of St Denis. This area has since been ploughed out and there are no signs on the surface. This map reference is not contiguous to the house. The description of Elvastone doesn't suggest a fortified house but the mound Petite Haute might be a motte, although the location and description might also suggest a prospect mound at the end of the avenue of chestnuts. Shoesmith writes that a further place name 'The Rounds' at SO528284 may be related. This is certainly a place name associated with earthwork enclosures, including Ringworks but in this case may again most likely be a post-medieval landscaping feature.
