Mentioned as a castle in 1305. (King)

C19 Grade 2-star Elvetham Hall is built on site of mediaeval manor, once the home of Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset. Visited by Henry VIll and Elizabeth I. (Hampshire Treasures)

Gatehouse Comments

There are some remains of the park pale showing the park was rather more extensive than the current park. Probably the site of DMV. No licence to crenellate known for this house, but these were never a requirement and it is probable the medieval manor house had some defensive features both to defend against thieves and to show the status of the family.
