Gatehouse Comments

It is actually uncertain to which of the several Normanby's in and around Yorkshire Harvey was referring to. Normanby Hill at SE731818 is part surrounded by 'double dikes' but this looks in no way like a castle or even an Iron Age fort. However, given the general nature of the buildings listed by Harvey, this is perhaps more likely a reference to Normanby Hall near Middlesborough (now in the unitary authority of Redcar and Cleveland at given map reference). This is a C19 house but on the site of a medieval manor the tenurial history of which (see VCH Yorkshire North Riding) is consistent with a fortified manor house although there is no actual evidence to support this.
