There are considerable remains of an old mansion known as Prendergast Place on the road leading to the field and pathway called the "Gail" (Gyle — ie Welsh for a sheep walk); this, however, could never have been the home of the Prendergasts, who would certainly have built their house in a position where it could be defended; it is possible that there may have been a motte and baily castle where the Rectory now stands, as the lord's castle and the church were often built near one another, and that in later times the Mansion, probably in the fourteenth or fifteenth century, of which the existing ruins formed part, was built. (Brown 1914)

Gatehouse Comments

Entirely speculative suggestion of a motte and bailey with no supporting evidence.
