Clwyd Powys Archaeological Trust record of medieval castle reads 'Name (Castle Hill) locally said to denote site of timber castle (CPAT site visit 1978). No corroboration)'
On the basis of the dedication and perhaps the shape of the churchyard, an early medieval origin might be postulated, but there is no substantive evidence for this assertion. The later, medieval history of Tregynon is equally obscure, though it formed part of the Knights Hospitallers' Halstone estate. Rising ground north of the crossroads has the name Castle Hill, but no evidence of a fortification has been deteched here. (Silvester 1992)
