Gatehouse Comments

This site has been considered by some writers to be a castle but is rejected as such by Hogg and King. In CA (1983) King puts in possible castles list but writes probably natural. Adaption of a natural mound into a motte is a possibility. Presumably this is what Lewis refers to when he writes "Near Orsedd, in the hamlet of Edenowain, stood Castell Ty Maen, a seat of Ednowain Bendew, or "Owen the strongheaded," lord of Tegengle in the eleventh century, and one of the fifteen tribes of North Wales; there are no remains of this extensive pile, except the lofty mound on which it stood, now covered with a thriving plantation."
