Castell Mawr, Llanwinio, is a promontory enclosure complex set on a promontory above a stream confluence. A c.144m crescent of rampart, fronted by a rock-cut ditch, delimits the c.80m deep enclosure, at the apex of which is a roughly triangular mound, with sides of c.30m, ditched towards the enclosure: suggested as an Iron Age enclosure re-used as a medieval castle; identification uncertain - Castell Bach (Nprn304213), c.200m to the NE across a steeply wooded valley, is an apparently isolated motte. (Coflein)
The monument comprises the remains of a motte and bailey castle, a military stronghold built during the medieval period. A motte and bailey castle comprises a large conical or pyramidal mound of soil or stone (the motte) surrounded by, or adjacent to, one or more embanked enclosures (the bailey). Both may be surrounded by wet or dry ditches and could be further strengthened with palisades, revetments, and/or a tower on top of the motte. Castle Mawr mound is oval shaped having diameters of approximately 60ft and 100ft. The top of the mound has been dug into. The bailey is on the north-west of the mound and is defended by a single bank. (Scheduling Report)
