A ditched circular mound, c.20m in diameter, set on ground falling to the N. Mutilated by gravel-pitting and associated trenching. (Coflein)
Motte still standing up to a height of 4.0m with a few trees planted on it. Ditch still visible on the south-east side. Fading out towards the north. (Dyfed Archaeological Trust HER)
The monument comprises the remains of a motte and ditch, dating to the medieval period (c. 1066 -1540 AD). A motte is a large conical or pyramidal mound of soil and/or stone, usually surrounded by either a wet or dry ditch, and surmounted by a tower constructed of timber or stone. The motte at Castell Du measures c 20m in diameter and c 5m high and has a summit diameter of 16m. It is surrounded on all side by a ditch 4m wide and 0.5m deep except on the north east where a section of the mound has been removed by old quarrying. (Scheduling Report)
