I took the liberty of asking thew owner what he knew of this?  His reply was; 'It was discovered when we applied for planning permission on the main farmhouse including the bastle 17 years ago. The conservation architect in Carlisle identified and English Heritage subsequently confirmed this when they visited. It was decided not to list either building'. (Roger Wilson 2017)

Gatehouse Comments

Certainly in an area where peel-houses were commonplace and, from the air photo, of the right size and form to be a peel-house (although a rectangular building of 10m by 5m would include most forms of domestic building of many ages). Without more detail it is impossible to give a proper consideration of the evidence. Is this one of three houses labelled Sowporte on the 1607 Forest of Nichol map? Was it a house of a minor member of the Taylor family?
