The moat has been partially filled in at the NW corner, but is otherwise well-defined and partially wet (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Field Investigator, J R Foster, 27-AUG-1964).

SE 554174. Walden Stubbs. Medieval moat listed in survey (Le Patourel 1973).

A medieval moat is visible as an earthwork and medieval/ post medieval banks and ditches are visible as cropmarks on air photographs.

The moat is largely masked by trees from the air but a short section of ditch which has been interpreted as the south-eastern corner of the moat is visible at SE 5535 1740.

Further banks and ditches are visible surrounding the moat and on the same alignment and a rectangular bank surrounded by a ditch lies immediately to the east of the moat. However, the relationship between the features is unclear. (PastScape)

Gatehouse Comments

One of two near adjacent moats in the flood plain of the River Went (see Stubbs Hollins 1). May form a complex but still fundamentally homestead moats, not manorial. While flood defence may be the main function of these moats, along with the kudos of such a feature, this was in Barnsdale Forest, which had some notoriety as the place for outlaws.
