Balne - moats at SE608183 (Le Pat. just W.Balne Hall. She notes late 13thC. ref.), and at SE584193 just N. YEWTREE FARM. W. arm, shorter stretch E. arm, still waterholding, also at PARKSHAW WOOD, N. the intriguingly-named Chapel Garth Wood, WNW Wood Farm. Rectangular (N-S) platform enclosed water-holding moat with hooked arm to W. from SW corner, and isolated straight pond to N. of this, indicative of 2nd enclosure - SE584182 and (Le Pat.) SE581177 E. MANOR FARM, just SW of Chapel Garth Wood. One of these Vernoille Manor of Methams (Le Pat.). (Sneyd 1995)
SE 5832 1923 Moat (G.T.) (OS 6" map, (Provisional), 1956).
Resurveyed at 1/2500. Only the west and part of the east sides of this moat survives. The remainder has been destroyed by ploughing and modern farm building (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Field Investigator, J R Foster, 27-AUG-1964).
SE 584193. Balne. Listed as medieval moat of unclassified type near Yewtree Farm (La Patourel 1973).
A medieval moat is visible as an earthwork on air photographs at SE 5853 1924.
The north, east and west sides of the moat are visible and it measures 29m by 61m (Vertical aerial photograph reference number RAF 58/1639F21 0046 06-Dec-1954). (PastScape)
