Gatehouse Comments

No location more closely identified than square SO7628. No Ragman's Castle shown on OS maps in this or adjacent squares in Staunton Parish. Stanbrook Farm at SO77522797 was called Tump Farm on the 1st edn six OS map. There are a number of small quarries recorded in this area in PastScape and the 'tump' could be quarry spoil. Glaciation did reach this far south but a glacial drumlin seems unlikely. A small mound marking a farmstead held for some military service is not impossible in this area but the actual evidence is weak. Is Ragman derived from Radman an Old English term used in Domesday meaning riding man? A few small mottes in Shropshire may be associated with sub-manors held by Radman (i.e. Colebatch). Any information on a more specific location most welcome.
