A work which was formerly in this parish is illustrated in Nichol's Leicestershire, iv, I, p. 219. The diagram represents three banks inclosing the north, west, and south sides of a parallelogram, to the east of which were two quadrangular and one circular mounds, 3ft. in height, but they have been destroyed too far definitely to place them in Class G. (VCH)

The location of these earthworks was not established in field investigation. Possibly destroyed by railway or Grand Union Canal. (PastScape ref. F1 WW 28-MAR-1960)

Gatehouse Comments

PastScape locate this lost earthwork 'somewhere in the area SP638848'. However the given description allow for a fairly wide range of possible locations.Something about the reports of these earthworks lead Wall to think they may have been a defensive feature of a type normal associated with medieval fortified manor house - the group Class G 'moated inclosure with stronger defensive works'. However it should be noted that 'Academicus Leicestriensis' (Was this Nichols?) specifically stated the 'encampment was made of unditched embankments. Nothing in the topography read from the OS map would suggest the site of a medieval high status residence in area located by PastScape.
