A small castle or fortified manor-house stood on the site of the Railway Station at Etchingham (Leeney).

There is no trace of a castle or fortified manor house in the area of Etchingham railway station. A map dated c1850 shows a house surrounded by a water feature, which Leeney may have assumed to have been a defensive moat. Little remains of the water-feature save for drainage ditches on the W side of the station, none of which can be said to resemble a moat. (East Sussex HER)

Gatehouse Comments

The archaeological database records seem to be somewhat dismissive of this as a defensible manor although the C19 histories (i.e John Marius Wilson, 1870-71, Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales cited in A vision of Britain), although slight, seem to be confident in the assertion the site was moated before the railway was constructed.
