Local tradition of a castle at this grid ref but no firm evidence for it. (Higham). The rising ground in area of junction of Boarden Barn and Radenstile Lane is suggested as the possible site. House at SY00608086 is called Castlepark, and the bank on south side of Boarden Lane is thought to be significant. Watching brief arranged in advance of development. Higham considered the bank on the south side of Boarden Barn might be earlier than others in the vicinity. Watching brief recorded no building foundations or artefacts other than post-medieval pottery and clay pipe fragments. The site had been terraced at some time. (Devon Historic Environment Record)

Gatehouse Comments

Clearly the site is entirely feasible for an administrative centre/castle. The lack of medieval finds from a watching brief is not conclusive evidence of no medieval occupation, although is a matter for some consideration. See also Exmouth Danish Fort.
