In Clark's list of moated mounds or burhs, for Yorkshire, is recorded 'Stang Howe, near Hinderwell.'
Stang Howe is a prominent natural mound which has no features or earthworks visible on the top or around the edges. It seems likely that it may have been used as a focus for ritual or funerary activity in the prehistoric period, since it is close to a number of burial monuments, but there is no evidence for this. Present knowledge does not indicate that the site should be considered as nationally important. (PastScape)
