Clark lists in Lancashire "Robin Hood's Butt.–At Clapham is a mound, but its character is doubtful."

The mound known as Butt Hill or Robin Hoods's Butt is likley to be a natural feature but was tentatively included in a list of mottes by a Victorian antiquarian, who himself noted the element of doubt in this interpretation. (PastScape)

Gatehouse Comments

There are several places called 'Robin Hood's Butt' across the country. Ford's 1839, Map of the Lake District of Cumberland, Westmoreland and Lancashire shows a Robin Hood's Butt as a settlement midway between Clapham and High Bentham. Given this the likely identification of Clark's mound is Butt Hill, which looks distinctive on the map but there is nothing to suggest this is anything other than natural.On the parish boundary and the old county boundary but does seem to have been in Yorkshire not Lancashire.
