Cornwall & Scilly HER record of a medieval castle reads "Bond notes the early existence of "Castle Street" and "Tower Hill". On the basis of these names, he suggests that the raised area where these two streets meet may have been fortified in the medieval period.".

Gatehouse suspects these street names, if they do have significance, refer to some sort of harbour artillery defence of late medieval date although they may also refer to the local administrative centre of somewhat earlier origin.
