The parish boundary between Chobham and Horsell parishes ran across Castle Green in the 1840's, as illustrated on the Chobham tithe map; a triangular open space where Scotts Grove Road and the Guildford Road enjoin to approach Chobham through Castle Grove Road. Castele Grove Corner is mentioned in 1605, and the earliest reference to what could possibly have been a fortified building, is in 1461 with the mention of a 'Croft voc le Castell'. (SHHER)

Gatehouse Comments

This is not a usual site for the location of a castle and I would suggest that the term derives from some land that belonged to a, nearby, castle. Unfortunately there is no nearby castle but the royal palaces of Chobham and Woking might be candidates, since the medieval use of the term 'castle' was much broader than the usual modern definitions. Equally the Croft called 'le Castell' may be be an ironic use of the term for a mean house or an early example of a pub name.
