Gatehouse Comments

1890 OS map shows as site of Shuckburgh Castle and also of gravel pits so it is doubtful if anything remains and even aerial photos or geophysical survey will not be able to reveal meaningful evidence. Site now copse. Site now fairly isolated and not the recorded site of a DMV. Seemingly the Shuckburgh family came from Warwickshire and, although marriages moved various branches about the country, do not seem to have had medieval holdings in Cambridgeshire. The VCH parish history for Dullingham has no relevant information and the name Shuckburgh does not occur in any volume of the VCH for Cambs except as a C20 authors name. Probably this was a post-medieval house but this needs more investigation and further information and suggestions would be welcome.
