A document of c1588 ordered "The clyfts at Sheringham and Cromer to be cut sloping and passage downe to ye water uppon occasio to be mured (walled or blocked) upp and a parapet to be made upon ye topp. The oulde heith (wharf) to be intrenched to impeach the coming of ye enemy there" as defensive works against the Spanish Armada. This is a several mile stretch of low cliffs so the work involved was quite considerable and may well not have taken place.
