Site of Royal Hunting Lodge obtained by Henry VIII, and given to four of his queens but never used residentially. King John also had a house here for a few years, although possible not the same site as that of Henry VIII, this was a modest timber building used on a few occasions by John.

At Finmere Oxon. a hunting lodge was built in 1208 on land belonging to the hermitage. In 1218 the hermit returned and the land is described as "the place where the house of King John was situated". House built 1207 under supervision of King's chief forester Hugh de Neville. (PastScape)

Gatehouse Comments

Map reference for Finmere parish church although the Hermitage is unlikely to have been the manorial centre and was probably some distance from the church.
