n 1322 Robert {le Ewer} obtained the king's permission to fortify his house at Westbury, and about the same time the king granted to him and his heirs for ever free warren in all their demesne lands of Westbury. (VCH)

Gatehouse Comments

Site must be under or close to Westbury House (rebuilt 1906) which is next to a ruined chapel and site of DMV and in a former park. Recorded in Domesday as Wesberie (West Fort) suggesting this was the site of a thegnal burh. Although Robert Le Ewer only got a charter of free warren (allowing hunting of foxes and hares) the modern house standing in a small park and Le Ewer may have had plans for a deer park. Robert fell out of favour with the king about this time (indeed the licence may have been motivated by trying to get him on side with the king), rebelled and dies shortly after so it is unlikely that any building took place as a result of this licence, but his existing house may well have been moderately defensible. However nothing remains, the modern Westbury House replaced a Queen Anne style building burnt down in 1904 (see East Meon History), but of the medieval building nothing is known.
