Suggested by Parker as site of house given licence to crenellate in 1294. The licence was issued to Johannes de Cokefeld. Stonehall Manor was held, from the de Clares, by the Cockfield family from 1210.

Gatehouse Comments

Prior to a fire in 1921 The Hall, then known as White Hall, stood near the road, NE of a mound. After the fire the house was rebuilt SW of the mound and was renamed Moulton Manor. The mound, which was excavated in 1850, seems to be a gazebo mound.The identification is problematic as the manor was held by Robert Cockfield until 1296/7 when he died, his sister Joan, wife of William Beauchamp, was his heir and she, in her own name, seems to have held the manor in 1313. Was this licence enrolled with the wrong name or does it, in fact, refer to somewhere else.
