Gatehouse Comments

Matthew de Mount Martin is not mentioned in the VCH parish history and if he held the main manor of Westbourne how he came to hold it is unclear. In 1302 the manor was held Richard FitzAlan, Earl of Arundel. A location near to the church, at the given map reference, is likely for the main manor house. However it is possible the Mount Martin house was a sub-manor somewhere else with the local area. The lack of even slight earthworks suggests the manor house was mainly timber and is unlikely to have been a strongly defended house.
