An excavation was undertaken by L Helliwell and J Jackson for the Southend Historical Society to determine the history of the artificial mound on which the house stands. The site is moated. A major retaining wall was found to hold the raised mound on the north-east side. The south gatehouse was discovered, also some evidence of a north gatehouse or bridge abutment; bridge timbers lie beneath the later earth causeway. The garderobe was also found, and its date of abandonment is suggested as circa 1500. (PastScape)

Gatehouse Comments

The location given is an entirely feasible site for a manorial centre. The neighbouring church is pre-conquest in date.
