Site of a moated fortified manor house, llicence to crenellate the manor house and to impark 600 acres was granted in 1447. The house has since been demolished, though traces of a moat can still be seen as earthworks, standing 1 metre high in places. (PastScape)

The manor was granted to the family De la Beche by William the Conqueror, they obtained a market charter in c. 1319.
