Possible motte 300m north of church. (King 1983)

Mound 32m in diameter at base, 5.7m at the top, 3.35m high with a ditch 4.2m wide and now 0.66m deep. Mound is covered with trees. The mound is conical with a flat top, on which is a brick column, 10-12 feet high. Small trench cut into S side The mound lies on a hill called Devil's Hill and is apparently a folly: 'There is a hill called Devil's Hill and there is a mound erected somewhere about 1800 by my great uncle, Roger Pettiward - for private reasons - partly to dispose of some superfluous soil, and partly to conceal a sewage vent pipe.' (Pettiward). (Suffolk HER)

Gatehouse Comments

King clearly missed the Pettiward article in a very obscure collection of newspaper articles from the East Anglian Times. More surprisingly the VCH also seem to have been unaware of the story of the construction of this mound. Previously recorded by Gatehouse as a possible motte, since 19-11-2009, rejected on bases of Suffolk HER record.
