Small motte (King 1983 ref. VCH)

Mill mound. Flat topped mound, circa 30m diameter and circa 1m high. Causeway on W side of ditch. Summit has cruciform ditch, 90cm deep. (Suffolk HER)

In Jack's Grove, Combs, is a bowl shaped, flat topped mound, with outer ditch, measuring some 30.0m. in diameter overall, the mound rising 1.0m. above ground level. There is a causeway across the W. side of the ditch and on the summit of the mound is a cruciform ditch approximately 0.9m in depth. It stands on the E. end of a ridge.

Although considered by Pevsner to be a motte there is no doubt that it is a Mill mound (F1 FGA 03-MAR-66). (PastScape)

Gatehouse Comments
