Mid C14 moated manor house altered in the early C17 and C19. Possibly on the site of an earlier castle. (PastScape)

Moat. Only S arm and fragment of N arm remain wet. W arm filled but remains distinct, E arm incorporated into gardens. Isolated, circa 300m from parish boundary, circa 550m from church. Occupied, house circa C16. "On site of castle" (Suffolk HER)

Gatehouse Comments

Quite what Copinger meant by an ancient castle, or what his source for this was is unclear. This certainly could be the site of a Saxon thegnal burh, even though it is about 550m from the parish church. Whether this was enlarged and strengthened to become a 'castle' following the Conquest is more questionable.
