A C15 solar tower formerly existed at Aspley Hall, near Nottingham. Originally a hunting lodge of Lenton Priory, this three-storeyed brick tower with slightly projecting newel in the corner, was similarly attached to a hall complex. The first floor was a retiring chamber to a property that developed into a country house for the prior and his guests. A rental of c.1544 shows that it was a timber-framed dwelling with hall, kitchen, two parlours, and chambers above. The tower was embraced in a rebuilding of c.1600, but was totally pulled down in 1968. (Emery)
