A 'pele house' (HER 6707) on the north side of Main Street, reputedly dating to between 1541and the 17th century was demolished in 1969 (Campbell and Dixon 1970, 178-81). (Northumberland Extensive Urban Survey 2009)

Strong house was constructed in the main street, a few doors east of Red Lion Tower It carried a 1607 date stone. The 1607 building, no doubt constructed by by Sir Richard Lowther, was demolished in 1969. It had been a two-storey house, 31 by 20 feet, with internal stairs and other refinements, most of which had suffered at the hands of renovators before it was raised. (Dodds 1999)

Gatehouse Comments

This is one of the 'several bastles' in the town mentioned by King. There is, unsurprisingly considering the possible existence of 2 towers and 5 or more bastles in Haltwhistle, some confusion between authors as to the details of some of these buildings.
