Probably a bastle house; converted and extended and now shops/offices with storage above. Late C16-early C17 , enlarged in early C18 and C19. Painted roughcast masonry, pantiled roof and brick chimney stacks. Tall 3-storey block of 3 wide bays. Huge boulder plinth and bastle-type masonry on right return. Off-centre replaced door and overlight in stone surround under bracketed wooden hood. Door flanked by C20 glazed shop fronts. Replaced sashes on first floor: 2 windows at right in smaller openings. 12-pane sashes on second floor: 2 sashes at right have thick glazing bars. Roof has swept eaves, coped right gable and shaped kneeler. Rebuilt ridge stack. Wide pebble-dashed right end stack with water table and top ledge. C19 additions on rear. (Listed Building Report)
T C Video forms the eastern part of a three storeyed block on the north side of the Market Place. The building is being renovated at the time of survey; the front elevation (normally rendered) was exposed and showed coursed stone of 18th century character, with very weathered dressings to the windows. Older fabric in the form of massive rubble masonry and a boulder plinth is evident in the lower part of the east wall, exposed in an open passage. This wall is c.1.2m thick at ground and first floor level, as against the side walls which are only 0.5m-0.6m. At first floor level the end wall has a flue inserted in an earlier opening with plastered jambs, with a small wall cupboard on the south. It would seem likely that this end wall is a remnant of a bastle (Ryder 1994-5). (Northumberland HER)
