Old farmstead, probably all basically C17 with a farmhouse which shows several indications of being derived from a bastle. (PastScape ref. Dodds 1999)

Woodhead Farmhouse was built in the 17th century. The eastern part of the house may be a bastle, but this is an unusually easterly location for such a building. (Keys to the Past)

House, originally two dwellings. C17, altered. Rubble with dressings and roughly-shaped quoins; Welsh slate roof, two brick stacks. South elevation in 2 sections: left part 2 storeys, 2 bays; lower windows retain lintels of 3- and 4-light mullioned windows, upper windows (including narrow window to far right) with projecting brick sills. Steeply-pitched roof with end stacks. Left return shows massive stepped stack flanked at attic level by narrow chamfered lights, one with old iron bar. Lower right part 2 storeys, 2 bays, irregular; to far left renewed door in chamfered surround with flat-pointed head in square frame, and traces of possible blocked doorway above; lower windows, that to right part-slatted, with timber lintels and brick sills, upper 8-pane Yorkshire sashes. Right return shows boarded door with 4-pane Yorkshire sash and renewed 4-pane sash with timber lintel above. Interior; walls 0.75 metre thick, old collar-beam trusses. The east part of the house may be an unusually easterly bastle. (Listed Building Report)

Gatehouse Comments

The location is rather on the southern, rather than eastern, edge of the main peel-house zone.
