Gatehouse Comments

The house of this name appears to be at NY639679 and to be in Northumberland. However, in Shielings and Bastles Ramm describes a farmstead, he calls Wardrew, NW of Wardrew Farm at NY63656845 as a rectangular building 37.5ft by 18ft with opposed central doorways. Nothing at either location is in PastScape. Keys to the Past has a Post-Medieval building, at NY6364458456 recorded as 'A ruined building known as Green Hole is marked on the Ordnance Survey map of 1866.' This is just visible on the air photo as a grass covered rectangular feature with approximately the dimensions given by Ramm. Ramm's description is not that of a pele-house bastle (the form of bastle he was otherwise describing). Salter is either confused by Ramm or was writing about another bastle Gatehouse has not identified.
