The park was recorded as 'le Scaleparke' in 1484 (Smith) and was licensed by a grant given to Ralph, Earl of Westmorland in 1405 to enclose 300 acres of land for a park and to build a lodge within it. The northern boundary corresponded with a 'deep and broad trench' (Tor Dike - SD 97 NE 1) and the southern boundary with the area around 'Dove Cove'. The park is now divided into two large enclosures (presumably the area of land belonging to West Scale Park at SD 977745 and East Scale Park at SD 985746 on OS 6" 1909). Gatehouse Comments

In 1404 Ralph Nevill was given licence to empark 300 of his lands in Kettlewell with additional licence to build a lodge or fortalice in the park. The actual form of this lodge, if built, is unknown although a wall of stone and mortar with battlements was mentioned in the licence. The location is likely to be either West Scale Park (SD977745) or East Scale Lodge. The lack of remains may suggest either the lodge was not built or was of relatively slight construction.One definition of a 'fortified manor house' is a house built under a licence to crenellate but this hunting lodge was probably not the administrative centre of a manor.
