Country house designed by John Carr and built 1762-67, possibly on the site of a fortified house, and replacing an early 17th century house designed by Inigo Jones. The present house is Palladian in style, built of sandstone ashlar with a slate roof. The central three bays of the main front are recessed behind a projecting portico of four giant Ionic columns, approached by an imperial staircase. (PastScape)

Gatehouse Comments

C18 Hall on site of house granted licensed to build a 'crenellated fortalice' to Geoffrey le Scrope in 1338. He had obtained the manor in 1321, from the family of constables of Richmond Castle. The VCH suggests the house was used as a hunting lodge.
