Gatehouse Comments

No Tateshall, Tates or Tate place-names in OS gazetteer for Norfolk. The De Tateshall's were a noble family with wide holdings in East England including Norfolk. The name seems to originate before the Conquest and they gave their name to Tattershall in Lincoln and in Yorkshire. Tateshall was also the name of the manor in which Pontefract Castle stood. There is a village called Tittleshall with a large moat at TF895215 and the manor of Tivetshall north of Diss which has several moated site the largest of which is Bunnetts Moat at TM159866, however Gatehouse believes that this a mislocated reference by Harvey to another know site, possibly Pontefract or Tattershall.
