Following a survey of the coastal defences of the Norfolk of 1539, a small battery, possible of only a single cannon, was built at Old Hythe to oppose beach landings. Its location is today marked by 'Old Hithe'. An elaborate plan to fortify Weybourne in 1577 probably only amounted to a strengthening of this battery. (PastScape ref. Kent, 1988)
