The site of Marshalls House, Romford, demolished in 1959. A 'motte-and-bailey' is recorded in the grounds, and unspecified Roman finds have been recovered from the area. (PastScape)

An earthwork of 'motte and bailey' measuring 30m x 10m and 6.5m high, containing a 'cooking hearth lined with flints' is reported from the grounds. (PastScape – ref. Essex Countryside Magazine )

Gatehouse Comments

The Essex Countryside Magazine is hardly a journal of record and the reference to a motte and bailey seems to be an isolated and elderly remark not made by an archaeologist. On the first edition OS map of 1881 the alignment of the mound, directly aligned with Marshall House, is most suggestive of a fairly recent garden or park feature. The recorded hearth may just represent a gardeners 'brew up' made during construction.
