There is not much to see on this site except for a small mound with stunted tree on top. There is evidence of stones overgrown with grass on the top of the mound. An elderly resident recalls that the site has always been called 'Putley Castle' and he remembers walls standing when he was a little boy. (Herefordshire Through Time)
Small mound with stunted tree on top. (1952) Evidently consists of stones overgrown with grass, 1 of oldest inhabitants told me it had always been called Putley Castle & he remembered quite a lot of wall standing as a boy. Some of walls at Newtons Farm and the lodge gates of Putley Court have been built of stones (OS record VEL 1952) Castle & moat 1/2 SE of Putley Court (Bevan) No trace at site or in immediate vicinity (OS reccord 1971) Shown as an island on the tithe map and called Island with Mill Pond. It seems to low to be a defended site but there was clearly a building here at one time which no doubt supplied the stone for the wall at Newton's (HSM 24422). Pottery from a badger set on the island was identified as a jug handle of 14th to 16th century date. (Currie and Lowe, 2005). (Herefordshire SMR)
