Earthwork remains of a possible motte identified at Lower Pedwardine. The motte is about 85ft in diameter at the base. On the south side an outer rampart forms a small ditch. The mound rises four and a half feet above the ditch, and about 11ft above the surrounding ground on the other side. Traces of a silted up fish pond were found in 1968. (PastScape)

Mound roughly circular on the S side an outer rampart forms a small ditch. Probably altered (RCHME) Mound 28.33m diam, height above ditch 1.3m. Height above surrounding ground 3.66m. (Hinkling) The mound, with part of its ditch and counterscarp has buried stone and stone was exposed by animals 20 years ago on the mound. There may have been a tower on the mound and concentric wall around it. (Stirling Brown, 2005). (Herefordshire SMR)

Gatehouse Comments

Site of DMV. The suggestion of a tower and reveting wall on the motte are intriguing but require proper investigation.
