The existence of Ledbury Castle is witnessed as having castle-guard duties attached to it, by Painter. Painter's authority is formidable, but no historical or archaeological record exists of any castle at Ledbury (Hereford). It seems that he was depending on Rot. Lit. Claus., ii, 559b (1223). This refers to military services owed at the Bishop of Hereford's castleof 'Ledebir' North; i.e., Bishop's Castle, Shropshire. (King 1983)

Gatehouse Comments

Ledbury is listed by Harvey as a castle site. Not known if this refers to Medieval Bishops Palace or prehistoric fort called Wall Hills just West of Ledbury or even the Herefordshire Beacon. From the general tendency of Harvey's listings this probably refers to Wall Hill and, since there is no evidence of medieval reuse, this site can be rejected. See also Bishop's Castle.
