The earthwork and buried remains of a motte (possibly ringwork) and bailey castle at Edvin Loach. The remains of the castle include an Earthen motte mound which is circular in plan with a maximum diameter of 30m. Its sides rise up to 2m to a flat top around 22m in diameter. The motte is surrounded by a broad ditch from which material for its construction will have been quarried. The ditch is clearly visible around the south west quarter, where it survives to a depth of 0.4m and 10m wide. The bailey extends eastwards from the motte, forming a roughly square enclosure with a maximum width of 70m. The central part of the bailey is now occupied by the churchyard belonging to the Old Church of St Mary (C11). (PastScape)
Ringwork & bailey. Buried stone in the ringwork, presumably indicating a shell keep. Much stone on the site & buried in the ditch. A partially collapsed stone wall on the counterscarp bank bordering the farmyard is much thicker at the base than the usual field walls, approx 5'. the C11 ruined church & the later church sit within the bailey. This is an early site which at present is being tidied up, this may remove evidence that should be recorded as soon as possible, the last remaining portion of the bailey ditch is being filled in.
