Unlocated site of a castle. "There was a castle at Steeple but little now remains." In 1086 lands in Steeple held by the king (1 hide) Eudo Dapifer (3 hides 35 acres) Henry de Ferrers (3.5 hides) and Ranulf Peverel (9.5 hides). This is an area of extensive ploughing and probably also subject to occasional coastal inundation so evidence for a castle is now probably lost. (Unlocking Essex's Past)

Gatehouse Comments

Given map reference is for parish church but this seems to be a medieval parish of dispersed settlement and Domesday record suggest three manors so whichever manor managed to get a 'castle' attribution (presuming this is not a reference to a prehistoric earthwork) could be some distance from the church.
